Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) improves workability and adhesion of mortars and cementitious products by retaining water. It ensures easy mixing and application.
HPMC is also used as a lubricant, stabilizer and thickener. These properties make it a versatile additive for a variety of construction and household chemical applications. Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose is mainly used in construction as a building material. It is used as a thickener, film-former, binder, dispersant and protective colloid.
1) Appearance: HPMC is non-ionic cellulose ether, white off-white powder or granule, odorless and tasteless, soluble in cold water, glacial acetic acid, ethanol, methanol and propylene glycol, slightly soluble in acetone according to the degree of substitution, almost insoluble in hot water, ethylene glycol and toluene. hpmc is dissolved in a mixture of 10% methanol and 90% methylene dichloride, to form a colloidal solution.
(2) HPMC solution has surface activity, high transparency, stable performance, when heated to a certain temperature the solution becomes turbid or forms flocculent gel, but after cooling the solution becomes clear and transparent again. Different models of HPMC gelation temperature is different. Solubility varies with viscosity, the lower the viscosity, the greater the solubility. Different models of HPMC are different in some properties, the solubility in water is not affected by pH value.
3) Particle size: 80 mesh pass rate is 100%.
(4) Loose packing density: 0.25-0.70g/mL (generally 0.5g/mL or so), specific gravity 1.26-1.31mL.
(5) Discoloration temperature: 190-200℃; carbonization temperature: 280-300℃.
(6) Surface tension: 42-56dyn/cm (2% aqueous solution).
7) The higher the methoxy content in HPMC, the lower the gelatinization temperature, the higher the solubility and surface activity in water.
8) HPMC also has thickening, pH stability, water retention, excellent film-forming properties, good dispersion and adhesion.
