HEC-Hydroxyethyl Cellulose Manufacturer

HEC-Hydroxyethyl Cellulose Manufacturer

Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is a gelling and thickening agent derived from cellulose. HEC is a non-ionic water-soluble material with good properties of thickening, suspending, bonding, emulsifying, film-forming, stabilizing, dispersing, water retention, etc. It is widely used in coatings, construction, pharmaceuticals, food, paper making and polymer polymerization industries.

Problems Solved

Ding'ao hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) solves several challenges:
Viscosity issues: Addresses problems associated with inconsistent viscosity in products such as coatings and adhesives, ensuring better application and performance.
Stability Issues: Acts as a stabilizer to mitigate separation or deposition of ingredients in formulations, especially in emulsions and suspensions.
Water retention challenges: Addressing difficulties in maintaining moisture content, improving ease of use and extending drying times in construction materials.
Poor adhesion: Improving the bonding properties of adhesives can help improve adhesion and bonding.
Inadequate film formation: Improve surface film formation to ensure uniform and stable film formation, especially for coatings.
Rheology modification requirements: modify flow behavior to address handling and application issues in a variety of formulations.

Characteristics

HEC is soluble in cold and hot water.
Aqueous solutions of HEC are stable and will not gel at high or low temperatures.
HEC is a nonionic cellulose ether that remains chemically and physically stable over a wide pH range.
HEC exhibits excellent performance as a thickener, water-holding, suspending and dispersing agent, and as a protective colloid.
HEC can be stored for several cycles without significant degradation and its viscosity remains stable in aqueous solutions.

Properties of aqueous solutions

1. Concentration and viscosity
The viscosity of an aqueous solution of HEC increases rapidly with its concentration.
By selecting the grade and concentration of the aqueous solution, an aqueous solution with the desired viscosity can be adjusted.
2. Shear rate and viscosity
Aqueous solutions of HEC are non-Newtonian fluids whose viscosity varies with shear rate.
Viscosity increases as the shear rate decreases, while viscosity decreases as the shear rate increases (thixotropy).
The thixotropy of aqueous solutions of HEC increases with higher molecular weight viscosity products and decreases with lower viscosity products. Low viscosity products have very low thixotropy and exhibit Newton-like fluid properties.

Dissolution speed

There are two types of HEC: normal type and modified dissolution type.
The normal type has a fast dissolution rate and can be added to water with agitation for rapid preparation of aqueous solutions.
The modified dissolution type has a lower dissolution rate and improved dispersibility in water through surface treatment. It prevents powder agglomeration during aqueous solution preparation.
The "F" and CF grades at the end of the brand name correspond to the improved solubility type.

Dissolution Methods for HEC

The following procedure is recommended for preparing an aqueous solution.
The water must be well stirred and the HEC should be added to the water gradually to prevent the formation of lumps in the water.
HEC should be added before the viscosity of the solution begins to rise.
Stirring should be continued until the added HEC is completely dissolved.
Dissolution of HEC can be made easier by applying one of the following methods.
Wet the HEC with a water-compatible alcohol before adding it to the water.
HEC is mixed with another powder that is not miscible with water or is less soluble in water.
Improved solubility types (grades ending in F and CF) are dispersed in water as soon as they are added and then gradually begin to dissolve, thus preventing the formation of powder agglomerates and making it easy to prepare aqueous solutions.

Summary of Frequently Asked Questions

What is HEC?
The full name of HEC is hydroxyethyl cellulose. It is a non-ionic soluble cellulose ether. It is used as a thickener and gelling agent in personal care products, construction materials, adhesives and more.
How is hydroxyethyl cellulose soluble in water?
Hydroxyethyl cellulose is soluble in hot or cold water. Disperse in water and stir vigorously or use a stirrer until completely dissolved. Depending on the molecular weight, the aqueous solution will have different molecular weight classes. It is normal for the thickening effect to be delayed.
What are the applications for your HEC products?
Our HEC products are used in the construction, cosmetic, and oil drilling industries.
Can your HEC products be used in pharmaceutical grade?
So far, we only make daily chemical grade and construction grade cellulose products.
Is hydroxyethyl cellulose good for the skin?
Hydroxyethylcellulose is derived from cellulose and has been proven to be a non-toxic product. Hydroxyethyl cellulose is used in cosmetics to act as a thickener and improve the texture of cosmetics. It ensures easy and even application on the skin. Moreover, it does not cause irritation and to some extent will prevent itching and reactions on the body.
